KUVASZ HISTORY
In the fifteenth century the Kuvasz was kept in the court of King Matthias, who claimed to trust only his Kuvasz dogs and not people. Known in many countries, it was in Hungary that the Kuvasz developed into the form in which he is seen today. Its name in Turkish means "safekeeper." The word Kuvasz comes from the Sumerian word Kuassa. This word has been found inscribed in cuneiform on boards excavated from a number of ancient Sumerian cities. One being from a clay tablet 7,000 years old, found in 1931, during explorations of the ruins of the city of Ugarit, also in Mesopotamia, ruins dating back to 5,000 B.C. Under excavations directed by Sir H. J. Mcdonald a clay tablet was found on which was inscribed in cuneiform writing the word KU_ASS. This tablet is displayed at the London British Museumses and horsemen.
After world war 2 a search for the Kuvasz was made and only approximately 32 were found, The invading forces would shoot the Kuvasz upon sight, because of their reputation to protect their family, and property.Fortunately for the love of the Kuvasz, breeding began to try and repopulate them. They are still rare, especially throughout the United States and Canada.
