Kuvasz are a large breed, originally from Hungaria.
They were almost extinct at the end of the german wars. Only 32 found remaining. The envading forces knew these dogs guarded what was theirs to the point of self sacrifice and would shoot them upon sight.
The dogs were used to guard their homes and property and herds and flocks. A Kuvasz runs so fast, he leaves single tracks like a wolf. The Kuvasz can run as fast as the horse and jump as high as the man on the horse that was trying to steal cattle or sheep. They would knock the theives from the horses and attack them.
They are highly intelligent and make judgement calls. The state agricultural dept. of Cali. has deemed them one of about three breeds of dogs to use as a team of two or more to protect against,cougars, bears,wolves and coyotes.
The dog is very discriminate to their families to pleasing and displeasing. Wanting to please their owners. They are very loyal. My male kuvasz stays by my side. Even as other dogs look out the window, while driving, he sits and stares at me, never looking away. You feel safe with your Kuvasz watching out for you. Now days they are used more for show, atleast in America and Canada, and in these countries they are still extremely rare. I still work my dogs and keep the instincts alive and well. The males are larger than the females, but the are equally protective.and equally smart. They are also known as water rescue dogs. They can be taught anything at a young age.
